Person snorkeling in the turquoise water of the Sea of Cortez near La Paz

The Sea of Cortez off La Paz has crystal-clear water, rocky reefs and an amount of marine life that's hard to match anywhere in Mexico. Snorkeling here requires no experience: with a life vest, mask and fins — all included on board — anyone can enjoy it. This guide sums up the best snorkeling spots in La Paz and how to visit them in a single day.

Quick answer

The best snorkeling spots in La Paz are San Rafaelito (sea lions and reef), Balandra (shallow, calm water, ideal for beginners) and Espíritu Santo Island (bays like San Gabriel, with colorful fish and turquoise water). On a private experience with Avante Charters you can visit several in the same day, with all gear included.

San Rafaelito: snorkeling with sea lions

San Rafaelito is a small lighthouse islet about 30 minutes from La Paz, surrounded by a rocky reef full of life. It's the most famous snorkeling spot in the area because a sea lion colony lives here, and you can observe them in their natural habitat.

The water is clear most of the year and the depth is moderate, so it's enjoyable even without experience. Arriving on a private boat lets you pick the best time of day and stay as long as you like, without group-tour schedules. Learn more on our San Rafaelito page.

  • Rocky reef with colorful fish
  • Clear water and moderate depth
  • About 30 minutes from the departure point

Balandra: ideal for beginners and families

Balandra is famous for its Mushroom Rock, but it's also an excellent place for a first snorkel: the water is shallow, calm and warm, with a sandy bottom where you'll spot starfish and small fish. It's the perfect stop for first-timers or families with kids.

From the boat you can swim to the prettiest corners of the bay and combine snorkeling with paddle boarding and beach time. More details in our Balandra guide.

Espíritu Santo Island: a snorkeling paradise

Espíritu Santo Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site, concentrates some of the best snorkeling in the Sea of Cortez. Bays like San Gabriel offer turquoise water, reefs with tropical fish and, with luck, sea turtles and rays.

Given the distance, the island is best visited on a full-day experience. The advantage of going private is that the captain picks the bays with the best conditions that day, and you decide how long to stay in the water. See the route at Espíritu Santo Island.

When is the best season for snorkeling in La Paz?

Snorkeling is enjoyable year-round, but the best visibility and most comfortable water temperature usually run from May through November. In winter the water is cooler, though the marine life is still there and there are fewer visitors.

Windy days can reduce visibility at some spots; that's why the captain adjusts the route every morning based on sea conditions.

What's included in a private snorkeling experience?

On our private experiences all snorkeling gear is included: mask, snorkel, fins and life vest. You also get paddle boards, food and drinks on board, so the day combines time in the water with rest and good food.

The experience costs $16,000 MXN per boat (up to 7 guests), so the larger your group, the better the per-person price.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know how to swim to snorkel?

Not necessarily. The life vest keeps you afloat and the captain picks calm, shallow spots. Still, always tell us your comfort level in the water so we can adapt the experience.

Is snorkeling gear included?

Yes. Mask, snorkel, fins and vest are included in the price, along with paddle boards, food and drinks.

What's the best place to see sea lions?

San Rafaelito. It's the most reliable spot near La Paz to observe sea lions in their natural habitat while snorkeling.

Can I snorkel at several spots on the same day?

Yes. That's the advantage of a private boat: you can combine, for example, San Rafaelito and Balandra, or several bays on Espíritu Santo Island, depending on the day's conditions.
